As mentioned in my last post, aircraft maintenance issues interrupted our journey to Sicily. After dinner we checked into our hotel in Rota. As previously mentioned, a very nice property. We were told the bus would be at our hotel the next morning at 0700 to pick us up and return us to the airport and continue our journey.
The restaurant did not open until 0730, so we would have breakfast on the base. At 0730, we received a call and were told the bus would be there at 0800 to pick us up. So we had a great meal in the hotel restaurant (courtesy of Atlas Air). At 0930 our bus had not arrived, we got another call that the buses were not coming, they were sending taxis to the hotel to pick us all up. ( 4 to a taxi). Soon after that, we had a parade of taxis going from our hotel to the Rota Navy Base. What a sight.
One of the interesting conversations I overheard this morning was carried on by several of our young passengers, explaining to each other as to why there were two commodes in the bathroom and the purpose of the second one ( a bidet). It was hilarious. This was, I am sure, the first foreign country they had ever been to.
We made it to the plane, loaded up, and continued on to Sicily. Upon landing we had a good view of Mt. Etna and a better view of our friends, Terry and Mary Carter, awaiting our arrival. What a welcome sight. Terry and Mary took us to our hotel and after we freshened up, had a great Sicilian meal of pasta, seafood, antipasto and Sicilian wine. Great food and better company. Tomorrow the adventure continues.
