The road less traveled 02-17-2016

Before coming to Sicily,  all I knew about Sicily, was that it was the home of the Godfather, it was the football for the Italian boot, General George Patton led the US troops to Messina in a race against the British forces under Montgomery.
What I have found is, the people are very nice,(they don't speak very good English), (but their English is better than our Italian),  the food is wonderful, the scenery is great , the wine is superb, the inner city driving is horrendous and there is no way I would try to drive my Tahoe here.  I do believe that governmental agencies in charge of procuring stop signs, speed limit signs, yield signs and any other sign to manage the flow of traffic in an orderly manner is wasting the taxpayers money.  Chaos is one description that comes to mind.  Enough of that.  On with the trip.
We are located in Trapani.  It is a major port city.  The Viking cruise ships use this location as a port call. The city was badly damaged in WWII when it was subjected to intense Allied bombardments.  When the allied troops arrived on 22 July 1943, the found a destroyed city and the residents enduring dramatic living conditions. The years from 1950 to 1965 saw a difficult reconstructing period. they were able to reestablish commercial and industrial activities.  It has been tough for these people.

We drove down to Marsala to seek out the vineyards from which the Marsala wines are made.  We had a great lunch in the old town and were able to taste several varietals of the Marsala wines.  Afterwards we left the coast and drove along the wine trail before returning to Trapani.  A good day, good lunch, good company, good wine.
